Best time to visit

Time of day

  • 4:00 AM to 7:00 AM — the most rewarding time: sea bath at dawn, Viswaroopa Darshan and the sunrise abishekam. Crowds build from about 8:00 AM.
  • 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM — usually the quietest window, since the temple stays open while many visitors rest. It is also the hottest part of the day.
  • After 5:00 PM — atmospheric but busy, especially at weekends.

Day of the week and month

  • Busiest: Sundays, Tuesdays (Murugan’s day), public holidays, the monthly Krithigai star, Sashti tithi, Visakam star, full moon (Pournami) and new moon (Amavasai).
  • Quietest: ordinary weekday mornings outside school holidays and festival months.

Season

The most comfortable months are November to February, although November brings Kanda Sashti crowds and north-east monsoon rain. March to June is hot and humid; carry water and cover your head in the sun. See plan your visit for a full season guide.
