Before you go
- Check the calendar. Tuesdays, Krithigai, Sashti, full moon and festival days are very crowded. If you want a quiet visit, choose an ordinary weekday. See temple timings.
- Stay the night before. The magic of Tiruchendur is at dawn. Staying in town lets you reach the sea by 5:00 AM.
- Pack two sets of clothes. One for the sea bath, one clean traditional set for darshan, plus a towel and a bag for wet clothes.
- Carry small notes and coins. For archanai, deposit counters, Nazhi Kinaru and flowers.
- Bring photo ID. Needed for rooms, and for the senior citizens’ queue.
At the shore
- Bathe safely. Stay in the designated area and in shallow water; follow lifeguards. Hold children’s hands at all times.
- Rinse at Nazhi Kinaru. The freshwater spring well is part of the tradition — and it washes off the salt. Read more about the sea bath and Nazhi Kinaru.
- Change before entering. Wet or beach clothing is not appropriate inside the temple.
In the temple
- Deposit your phone. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside. The deposit counters are near the entrance.
- Pick your queue deliberately. Free queue until 7:30 PM; senior citizens 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM; paid special darshan counters close at 6:30 PM. See the darshan guide.
- Know what you are seeing. Senthil Andavar faces east towards the sea. After the main darshan, visit Shanmukhar — the six-faced form with Valli and Deivanai.
- Offer an archanai. Buy an archanai ticket at the counter and give your name and nakshatram to the priest. It is simple and meaningful.
- Pay only at official counters. Ignore anyone offering faster darshan for money. Put cash offerings only in hundis or at counters with receipts.
After darshan
- Take home panneer ilai vibhuti. The temple’s famous prasadam of sacred ash in a panneer leaf.
- Eat at the annadanam or a local mess. The temple serves free meals at set times, and vegetarian messes near the temple serve excellent meals and tiffin.

Questions devotees ask
What should I wear to Tiruchendur temple?
Traditional, modest clothing: dhoti or trousers with a shirt for men; saree, salwar kameez or half-saree for women. Change out of wet clothes after the sea bath before entering.
Do I need to bathe in the sea before darshan?
It is a cherished custom, not a rule. Many pilgrims bathe in the sea and then at Nazhi Kinaru before darshan; others simply sprinkle sea water on their heads.
