What Kanda Sashti celebrates
Kanda Sashti marks the six-day battle in which Lord Murugan defeated the asura Soorapadman, as told in the Kanda Puranam. Tiruchendur is where Murugan camped on the shore before the final battle, which is why the celebration here is the largest in the world. The festival’s message is the victory of wisdom over ego: even Soorapadman, once subdued, is transformed into the peacock and rooster that serve the Lord. Read the full story on our history page.
Sashti viratham: fasting for six days
Many devotees observe the Sashti viratham for all six days. Practices vary by family and health:
- A full fast, or one simple meal a day, or only fruit, milk and water.
- Reciting the Kanda Sashti Kavasam, Kandar Anubhuti or Thiruppugazh daily.
- Staying at Tiruchendur for all six days, often in the temple’s mandapams and temporary sheds.
- Breaking the fast after Soorasamharam or after the Thirukalyanam, according to family custom.
If you are elderly, pregnant, diabetic or on medication, talk to your doctor before fasting, and choose a gentler form of viratham.
Watching Soorasamharam
On the sixth evening, Murugan’s festival image is carried to the beach, where effigies of the asuras are brought before him one after another. With each strike of the Vel the demon is “defeated”, and at the climax Soorapadman returns in form after form before being finally subdued. Lakhs of devotees watch from the sand, and the cry of “Vetrivel Muruganukku Arohara” rolls along the shore.

Tips for the evening
- Reach the beach by early afternoon; the best spots fill hours before the event.
- Carry water, a light snack (if not fasting), a cap and a sheet to sit on.
- Follow the barricades and police directions. Agree on a meeting point with your group in case you are separated.
- Keep children close and write your phone number on a card in their pocket.
- After the event, wait for crowds to thin before leaving; exits are very congested.
- Local television channels and the temple’s official channels often broadcast Soorasamharam live for those who cannot travel.
Stay and travel during the festival
- Rooms: book months ahead. If Tiruchendur is full, stay in Thoothukudi or Tirunelveli and travel in early.
- Transport: special buses run from across Tamil Nadu and additional trains are often announced. Vehicles are stopped well outside the town on the main days.
- Darshan: expect very long queues throughout the week. Paid darshan may be restricted on peak days.
